They watched their side fight back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Spain and qualify as group winners for the World Cup Round of 16.

It was an eventful night in Qatar as Germany, who also lost to Japan, were eliminated on goal difference despite a 4-2 win over Costa Rica.

But the night certainly belonged to Japan.

The game ended around midnight local time – or 6am at home, where thousands turned up early to celebrate together.

In the stadium, however, the fans put the champagne on ice in order to leave the field sparkling clean.

Supporters were pictured walking through the rows of seats, picking up rubbish and filling bin bags.

They even fist-poked the stadium staff they were helping – while some cheeky clenched fists couldn’t resist the cheers as they picked up the dustbin.

The Japanese fans were applauded for cleaning the stadium after the opening game of the World Cup – even though their team didn’t play.

They did the same after beating Germany and losing to Costa Rica – while the players did their part by leaving the dressing room in perfect order.

Hajime Moriyasu’s players and staff even left some origami swans on the table – along with a message to stadium staff that said “thank you” in Arabic.

And after her fans’ latest brilliant act of selfless kindness, more and more people took to social media to show their respect.

One said: “Huge respect to the Japanese fans in Qatar what they have done is just speechless and amazing!”

Another wrote: “Japan deserves to qualify not only because their fans serve humanity by always cleaning the stadium but also show great strength.”

A third added: “Japan fans are some man! They party and then they clean the stadium when they leave. Not just fans, players too. Something we need to learn from them! Huge respect!”

But one joked: “Japan fans should go and collect bags of tears at the stadium where Germany played.”

And one end user quipped: “Spain fans should clean up the stadium to thank Japan.”

They will meet Croatia in the next round on Monday, with the winner likely to face Brazil in the quarter-finals.
