She is documented as having been born on May 11, 1894 and raised on a corn farm – but never went to school and could neither read nor write.

Her daughter-in-law, Thandiwe Wesinyana, said Mazibuko is believed to have died of a stroke on March 3.

She said the entire community had “lost a mother.”

“We loved praying together and spent most of our time drinking tea and talking,” she told News24.

“I don’t know who else to have fun with.

“A wound has opened, my heart hurts and I’m shattered. The community is sad. We’ve all lost a mother.”

Mazibuko would have turned 129 in May.

Speaking to News24 to mark her birthday last year, Mazibuko said she was “amazed” to be alive.

“Why am I still here? People died around me,” she said.

“When will I die? What’s the point of living? The world has tired me for just sitting here and doing nothing.”

Thandiwe said she took Mazibuko to the hospital on February 14 and treated her for a stroke before being discharged on February 28.

She died at home three days later and will be buried in Jouberton on Saturday.

Mazibuko was one of 12 siblings – three of whom are still alive.

She had married elderly widower Stawana Mazibuko and had seven children together – and more than 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mazibuko previously shared how she “lived so well” on the farms she grew up on.

She said there were “no problems back then” – and missed the food she ate as a child.
