The North is ‘cut off’ for ONE month as a major train operator cuts its services

COMMUTERS face yet another travel hell after a major train operator cut its schedules and halted ticket sales due to staff shortages.

Avanti West Coast will only run four trains per hour from Sunday instead of the usual seven on the West Coast main line.

London Euston to Manchester services will be hit the hardest – down from three to one.

The news outraged passengers on the line, which also serves Birmingham and Glasgow.

Ryan Sutherland, a Manchester commuter, 28, who works in London, said: “It’s like the North West has been cut off for a month.

“I feel lonely.”

Ticket sales for travel Sunday through September 11 will be suspended while a new schedule is finalized.

A restricted timetable applies until further notice.

Avanti blamed staff shortages, which it attributed to illness and “unofficial strike action.”

But Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan called Avanti “lying misers” who didn’t employ enough drivers and depended on rest days and overtime.

He said the only strike was on August 13.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said he would demand Transport Secretary Grant Shapps give Avanti a deadline to fix the problem – or have it stripped of its franchise.
