FLORENCE, AL (AP)
Some residents think the northern Alabama city’s new logo may be sending the wrong message.
Florence’s new logo uses the first three letters of its name – a capital F followed by an L and an O arranged like an exclamation point – to form an F!
When the city announced the new logo this week, it drew immediate backlash and an online petition asking for the change with nearly 7,500 signatures. The city paid $25,000 to a Birmingham marketing firm to build the brand, WAAY-TV reported.
“The new logo symbolizes the passion and love of the Florentine people for the city,” the city said in a news release announcing the new logo. “Feelings of awe, joy and pride are all reflected in the exclamation point of the Florence icon.”
City leaders are pushing back against claims that they are not considering hiring a local company to do the job, saying a request for proposals has been made but no local companies have responded. return.
Residents became involved in the process early on through a community survey sent to hundreds of people, city officials said. WAAY-TV reported that it could not find a copy of the survey and that the city did not respond to a request to view it.
In a letter to residents on Thursday, Florence Mayor Andy Betterton said the new brand “will serve a variety of needs and audiences as our community grows and moves forward.”
“As we navigate the development of the new brand, one thing is for sure; This process has highlighted our community’s talent, humor and love for Florence,” wrote Betterton.
City Council member Kaytrina Simmons said she requested a meeting with the mayor and council to discuss the logo and revise it. In a letter to residents, Simmons apologized for the icon “having brought so much frustration to our great city”.
