A HUGE shake in the Football League pyramid could reportedly result in the National League being offered an extra promotion spot.
Until 1997, only the champions of what was then known as the conference won promotion to the EFL.

In 2003, a second promotion place was awarded, which is secured through the playoffs.

However, a new report in the Daily Mail says an additional one may be available soon.
It said the EFL was ready to offer three promotion spots to the National League “as part of their contribution to the financial reset called for by chairman Rick Parry”.
Talks between the EFL and the Premier League over more top-flight funds are currently deadlocked.
However, it claims there is “a recognition within the EFL that they also have a responsibility to support clubs further down the pyramid”.
And in many eyes, the “best way” to success is to offer an additional funding position.
It’s a particular favorite with clubs in the Championship – “not least because it wouldn’t affect them”.
However, the change will not affect the current campaign.

The rules governing the EFL’s promotion and relegation system must be approved by a majority vote of clubs.
And it wouldn’t be introduced until next season at the earliest.
