The mystery of the missing Hawaii Life plane after it disappeared from radar with 3 crew members on board sparked a frantic search

A FIERCE search is underway for a plane that disappeared from radar with three people on board while en route to pick up a patient.

The fixed-wing aircraft was en route from Maui to Hawaii’s Waimea Big Island when it disappeared around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Global Medical Response can confirm that one of our Maui-based Hawaii Life Flight emergency planes went under radar while en route to pick up a patient in Waimea, Big Island,” the aircraft company said in a statement.

“We are in the process of reaching out to their families.”

There were no patients on the plane at the time as the crew was en route to pick up anyone who needed assistance.

Air traffic controllers lost all communication with the aircraft around 9:30 p.m.

The plane was last sighted 17 miles south of Hana.

The Coast Guard dispatched boats, helicopters and cargo planes to the area in hopes of finding the missing plane.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has issued a declaration of emergency and has expanded the search to include state supplies.

A debris field was found 16 miles south of Hana on Friday, but it’s not yet confirmed if the debris came from the missing plane.

“One of the @uscg planes reported seeing a flare in the search area,” the Coast Guard’s Hawaii Sector said.

“A USCG patrol boat recovered debris from the area without confirming it came from the aircraft. Coast Guard search teams are continuing the search.”

According to EMS1, the area where the aircraft was last spotted is known for high winds and choppy water conditions.

Airplanes are a big part of Hawaii’s medical infrastructure.

Smaller islands rely on airplanes to transport patients with more serious illnesses to areas with more care.

“We need to offer services to all the people of Hawaii if they get so sick in a place where they don’t have access to the care they need and need to come here to Oahu,” Green told the Star Advertiser.

Normally 10 to 15 transfers are made every day.

Governor Green was an emergency physician on Hawaii’s Big Island before becoming governor.

Its declaration of a state of emergency allows Hawaii to augment its medical aircraft capacity with planes and flight crews from other states after the rescue plane disappeared.
