The Man Utd legend has been loudly booed by his own fans despite the Champions League win as he leads the club into horror season

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Edwin van der Sar has been booed by Ajax fans amid their terrible season.

After Erik ten Hag’s departure last summer, Ajax have endured a difficult season.

The Dutch are third in the Eredivisie.

This is a far cry from their recent history in the Dutch top flight, having won their last three league titles under Ten Hag.

And the fans put some of the blame on Ajax CEO Van der Sar.

Dutch journalist Willem Vissers reported on his Twitter page that loud whistles from the crowd were aimed at the former goalkeeper.

Taking to Twitter, a fan explained that he was the reason for the riots: “The leadership of the club is terrible.”

The fan added: “1.5 years[s] a terrible management. He just made a lot of terrible decisions. It all started when no technical director was appointed.”

The 52-year-old has managed Ajax since November 2016 and was promoted from marketing director in 2012.

Since joining Ajax, the club has won five league titles, two Dutch Cups and two Dutch Super Cups.

In 2019 there was even a remarkable run to the Champions League semifinals.

Still, it’s not the first time the Red Devils icon has drawn the wrath of Ajax fans.

Van der Sar was reportedly “harassed and bullied” by a group of angry fans in March ahead of the derby defeat by newly crowned champions Feyenoord.

The club’s previous title drought, which ended after four seasons in 2019, resulted in Van der Sar being booed in 2018.

As a player, the goalkeeper made 312 appearances for Ajax and won the Champions League in 1995 – something he later equaled with Man Utd in 2008.

He also helped win 13 other awards including four titles, the Uefa Supercup and the Uefa Cup.
