Frightened young men dying in the dark in the turbulent, icy canal. A tragic and horrific reminder of why the noise of the small boats must be smashed.
We were told by Rishi Sunak on Tuesday that the illegal migration scandal is basically just unfair. That it’s unfair to abuse our asylum system, unfair to enter the immigration queue, unfair to shoulder the bill with taxpayers.
The PM was absolutely right. That’s what annoys most people.
But the most basic and compelling argument is that it kills. Based in France, these evil, greedy gangs put people to sea with little concern for their safety.
And just hours after Mr. Sunak spoke, more lives were lost in horrifying scenes.
Panicked, frozen migrants – who were assured of easy passage and a warm welcome to Britain by the traffickers – instead clung to a punctured, sinking inflatable boat and cried out for help.
It is a miracle that so many survived, a testament to their rescuers.
No one with a shred of humanity can see this footage or these images without having their hearts in these people, whatever their motivation for reaching Britain and the route they chose.
PM has to climb a legal mountain
Such disasters have of course happened before – worst of all when 27 died in November 2021.
And they will happen again if Mr Sunak’s potentially groundbreaking new plan is blocked by Labor politicians or left-wing lawyers who usually wage war on the Tory government in court.
There are those wringing their hands on this issue, pretending that the migrants are all genuine refugees and dismissing the government’s strategy as illiberal.
There are also those who increase Britain’s appeal by helping migrants cross the sea and standing up for them in endless asylum claims.
You should all think hard about whether YOU are unknowingly perpetuating this heinous criminal enterprise with its callous disregard for human life.
Labor has no solution. His ramblings about more talks with France and more safe routes fool no one.
The sun doesn’t mind safer routes for real refugees. The Prime Minister rightly promised them. But they will not prevent those without a legitimate claim from risking their lives in the English Channel.
For this reason, the key deterrent at the heart of Mr. Sunak’s plan is to bar anyone who enters the country illegally.
We fear he has a legal mountain to climb. He is paralyzed by both human rights law and the European Convention on Human Rights.
But instead of engaging in partisan politics, raising obstacles, voting against it and wrecking it, the left should support a clearly detailed and thoughtful strategy that could truly end this nightmare problem.
They will surely save lives if they do.
