The IRS has paused 10 types of letters for taxpayers

It comes as the IRS enters this filing season with “several million original and revised returns” still pending, it said yesterday.

As of December 4, 2021, the government agency had 6.7 million billion unprocessed personal profits.

This number does not include the millions of modified returns that remain untouched.

The backlog is the result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which occurs as the agency’s budget and workforce shrink.

In an effort to make this tax season go more smoothly, the IRS will temporarily suspend automatic mailings and notifications to taxpayers until the backlog is resolved.

IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said: “IRS staff is committed to doing everything we can with our limited resources to help people during this time.

“We’re working hard, hourly, pushing creative paths forward in an effort to be part of the solution, rather than a problem.”

Here is a list of paused notifications:

What happens to other notifications?

The IRS does not have the power to stop all notices because some are legally required to be issued within a certain time frame.

Only the ones listed above will be suspended for the time being.

While these notices will be suspended, the IRS is still encouraging people to file or pay taxes on time as interest and penalties will continue to accrue.
