The horrifying mystery of the missing boy, 9, ends in horror after cops are led to an abandoned house

The body of a nine-year-old boy was found in the garden of an abandoned house in the Netherlands after a 22-year-old pedophile told police where the missing boy could be found.

Victim Gino van der Straeten was reported missing on Wednesday June 1 while playing football at a playground in the Dutch town of Kerkrade.

Gino’s 32-year-old sister, with whom he was staying, sounded the alarm when the little boy didn’t come home.

Witnesses said they saw children and a man playing in the playground when Gino disappeared, police said.

His disappearance prompted hundreds of locals to search the area in search of him, but only his scooter was found near a swimming pool in Landgraaf – around five kilometers from the playground where Gino went missing.

Gino’s clothing items were also found nearby, leading to Dutch police locating the suspect in Geleen, some 18 miles from Gino.

The adult man, described by police as “possibly involved in the disappearance,” was arrested Friday night.

Unfortunately, police have now confirmed they found the little boy’s body in an abandoned garden after the 22-year-old suspect told them where the body could be found.

“That led to a suspect on Friday afternoon. We found Gino’s body based on information provided by the suspect,” said Xander Beenhakkers of the Dutch police.

The suspect, believed to be Donny M. from Geleen, according to local broadcaster 1Limburg, has a criminal record, police said.

Police have yet to confirm the suspect’s identity.

Local media have described Gino as an alleged victim of a pedophile sex crime.

“We feared the worst scenario in the last few days” said the Mayor of Kerkrade, Petra Dassen-Housen, in a press conference.

“Many hoped, sought and sympathized. It is deeply saddened that Gino’s body was found in our Geleen community.”

Describing the discovery as “a terrible blow to the family,” the mayor added, “I’m at a loss for words.

Gino’s family issued the following statement: “Unfortunately on Saturday the police found Gino’s lifeless body. The sadness is unbelievable and terrible. The police will now continue the investigation and conduct it with diligence and prioritize finding out what happened and who was involved.”

“Gino must never be forgotten and must be remembered as beautifully and as best as possible as the sweet happy boy,” added the family.

Little Gino, who lived in Maastricht, stayed with his sister in Kerkrade because his mother was ill and he couldn’t stay with her.

A forensic team has been investigating two crime scenes in the town where Gino’s body was found, including the suspect’s home and the abandoned house behind which the nine-year-old was found.

The main suspect faces further interrogation over the kidnapping and death of the little boy.

He remains in limited detention and is only allowed to contact his lawyer.
