A HERO woman entered and shot dead a man after he opened fire at a crowded party, police say.
Dennis Butler, 37, showed up to a birthday party in Charleston, West Virginia, and opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, according to officials.
One woman at the event carried her own gun, which she had a permit to use.
When Butler opened fire on the group of about 40 people, the woman drew her own gun and fired back, hitting and killing Butler, police say.
She has been hailed as a hero for saving lives and will not be charged.
“She’s just a member of the community who lawfully carried her gun,” police spokesman Tony Hazelett told the Daily Mail.
Butler had an extensive criminal record, Hazelett added.
Except for Butler, no one was injured in the shooting, which took place at the Vista View Apartment Complex in northeast Charleston.
Police said Butler did not know anyone at the party but was upset after being asked to slow down while driving through the area.
Butler then left the scene, returned with the AR-15 rifle, and opened fire.
Butler had been arrested several times in West Virginia, but his charges were always dropped.
In 2016, he allegedly shot and killed another woman in Charleston who survived the incident.
Police are investigating how Butler was able to obtain an AR-15 rifle because, as a convicted felon, he does not have a legal right to carry a firearm.
