The Gavi masterclass helps Xavi secure his first trophy as Barcelona manager by beating Real Madrid in the Super Cup

The 18-year-old midfielder showed his coach’s shadow with a silky goal and two tasty assists to leave defending champions Real Madrid spooked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

It presents Xavi with his first managerial silverware after winning 25 trophies in his 17 years as a player at the Nou Camp.

Even though the game took place in the Middle East, it still had the same bite as Barca defender Ronald Araujo collided with Vinicius Jr early on.

Xavi’s side wasted no time in bringing the game to Madrid when defender Araujo arrived at the back post to test Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a header.

Madrid’s veteran midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric were bowled over by Barca’s young midfielder Gavi and Pedri.

The Catalan giants could have played in Stoke City’s red and white stripes and you would have known they were.

The young midfielders had Xavi’s side dancing in the Saudi desert as Courtois forced a low goal from Robert Lewandowski onto the woodwork.

But the tall Belgian had no hope of preventing Gavi’s 34th-minute opener.

The teen prodigy clung to the end of a quick countermove and slipped home cool.

And after Barca’s possession continued to dominate, Barca’s sandstorm left Madrid in a whirlwind as the second half-time point arrived.

This time Gavi became the provider after uncovering Lewandowski with a skillful cutback to allow the Pole to slip into an empty net.

Even when Carlo Ancelotti came out after the break, the Italian stayed cool, calm and collected.

But his eyebrow must have been raised when Ousmane Dembele raced at Alejandro Balde’s through ball to force Courtois into a save with his feet.

Gavi showed no sign of slowing down as he continued to slide across the field, the ball superglued to his boots.

The diminutive Spaniard then put his midfield partner on course for a third with the goals from a through ball Pedri.

The Saudi crowd began handing out “Oles!” before Karim Benzema silenced them with a late consolation.

But it was too little too late.

And with Barca ahead of them a three-point lead at the top of La Liga, Xavi could get the Catalan giants purring again.
