In an exclusive interview with The US Sun, Taurel admitted he ignored the case that had gripped the country last summer until he was cast in the film.

“When the story came out, I saw it on TV, I was just like the rest of the nation, but I mostly ignored it because I didn’t want to see it on TV because I knew it was someone’s family,” Taurel said.

“I know people have been talking about it and blogging about it, and I just felt like this is actually someone’s daughter. I don’t need to watch his tragedy.”

After being cast for the role, Taurel began researching the details of the doomed young couple’s story, using his own experience as a father of two to empathize with the mindset of Joe Petito, who the nation came to know a father desperately looking for his daughter.

“What I deduced from watching [Joe’s interviews] kept saying he had a public and a private personality,” Taurel shared with family, but also for Gabby.”

Laure also addressed the controversy surrounding the film, particularly critics who believe it is premature or in bad taste to make a film about Gabby just a year after her death.

The film’s actors, including Skyler Samuels, who plays Gabby, have been accused of trying to capitalize on the tragedy by participating in the project.

Actor Evan Hall also sparked conversations after he was spotted playing Gabby’s boyfriend, 22-year-old Brian Laundrie, in the trailer.

“I don’t know when the time is right. As an actor, you just step into the role that’s being presented to you and try to present it with as much integrity, truth and honesty as possible,” Taurel said of the film’s timing.

“At some point, the story has to be told and I think the most important thing is to raise awareness about violence against women to reinforce this important message for all women.”

While the Petito family gave their approval for the film, Taurel said he wanted them to know the project was meant to honor Gabby.

“We’re trying to honor Gabby’s life and legacy and the way she’s lived her life and bring the family respect for what they’re going through,” he told The US Sun.

The film reportedly explores the relationship between Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, and highlights the complications that arose between them during a cross-country road trip.

A trailer for it features actress Samuels as Gabby as she tells her friends how Brian becomes “like a complete stranger.”

Laundrie – played by Hall – is then seen arguing with Gabby in a restaurant, throwing objects from the dining table.

Gabby was reported missing by her family after her fiancé Brian returned to his parents’ Florida home without the vlogger, despite them spending the summer together in a van.

Her body was found on September 19 in Wyoming’s Grant Teton National Park. Coroner Dr. Brent Blue confirmed that Gabby died from strangulation.

Brian went missing while the search for Gabby was still ongoing and his body was eventually found in the woods near his home after committing suicide.

His notebook was recovered by the FBI along with his skeletal remains from Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in October last year.

The film tries to highlight the early signs that showed Gabby’s life was in danger, her disappearance and her murder.

The cast is led by Emmy-nominated actress Thora Birch, who plays the role of Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt.
