His arrest came after his model girlfriend, with whom he had spent several nights together in a luxury apartment, shared his picture on her Facebook account.

The Mexican is said to have arrived in Colombia to negotiate cocaine deals with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of the Colombian People’s Army (FARC) on behalf of the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

According to a local media outlet, Berugo has ditched all safety protocols while he was with the model, whose name has not been released.

She even convinced him to visit the busy tourist resort of Cerro de los Cristales, where he was photographed in her company.

His fate was sealed when US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents alerted Colombia’s anti-narcotics police to the suspect’s whereabouts.

Security cameras at Jose Maria Cordova International Airport reportedly caught him with another attractive woman.

Colombian intelligence officers then began following Berdugo and arrested him after nearly two weeks of surveillance.

Police spokesman General Jorge Vargas Valencia said: “We believe this finding was the most important in the arrest of Mexican cartel delegates who plan to commit drug trafficking crimes with the FARC in Cauca.”

The Mexican drug lord is in custody with an extradition order to the United States.

Lawyers are working to prevent his extradition, while police have reportedly claimed they were offered a $265,000 bribe to secure his release.
