In 2010, Variety reported that Hayden Panettiere had been cast as Amanda Knox in the Lifetime series (via Weekly entertainment). At the time, Knox was awaiting appeal after being found guilty of Kercher’s murder and receiving a 26-year prison sentence. In 2011, LA time reports that Knox’s family has begun proceedings to prevent the release of Lifetime’s “Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy”. One of Knox’s Italian attorneys, Maria del Grosso, wrote in an email that “The damage to Amanda Knox’s image, reputation and privacy is incalculable.” The lawyer also stated that “the film interferes with the proper process of justice because it claims to be based on a true story, while there is no ‘truth’.” [that has been] procedurally established.
Panettiere defended the film to The Los Angeles Times, saying, “I certainly received harsh questions, but then I talked about the fact that the film is very fact-driven and classy.” She added that the film doesn’t include any scenes that could potentially incriminate Knox or change how judges might feel about her in court of law.
