A FAMILY summer break takes a bit when their car rolls into a lake.

The Ford Focus Estate was almost completely submerged after its electronic handbrake failed at White Acres Resort in Newquay, Cornwall.

A park worker said: “The owners were very good and calm about the situation and were grateful no one was hurt.”

Local mechanics used a special machine to fish out the engine.

Electronic handbrakes, which have become commonplace in new cars, are said to be more reliable than traditional lever handbrakes.

However, they may not engage properly if the motors they control fail or there is a power problem.
