The challenge of preparing for extreme weather consequences

DEFIANCE, Mo. – People in St. Charles woke up Saturday morning with incomprehensible damage. A deadly tornado hit near Defiance on 94th Street and Freeway F around 8 p.m. Friday, leveling these two homes and several others. Two people were injured, one was killed.

“We had a fatality at the mansion behind us. Her husband was also injured,” said Dan Casy, New Melle fire chief.

“They’re older, they’re on the first floor of the house, one is in bed, the other is clearly getting up for a glass of water.”

A strong wind blew the house across the field. The couple was 100 meters away when they were found, the woman being transported to the hospital where she died.

A warehouse on Highway F collapsed, with one person trapped inside with five horses. The man was saved, and the two horses died.

Damage along Highway F was extremely severe.

Tony Frisella, manager of Frisella Nursery in Defiance, said: “I mean, the amount of trees being split like toothpicks is insane.

He said he had never experienced anything like this; Trees and debris filled the road on the way to the nursery.

“It took us about two hours to clear enough trees to get to this area. And I mean, never seen anything like this,” he said.
