The body of a missing 5-year-old child was found showing signs of sexual abuse on Monday when a man was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Police made the tragic discovery hours after an investigation into the missing person led them to a neighboring state.
The mother of the 5-year-old said she went missing at 6:15 a.m. on Monday, December 13, when she woke up and couldn’t find her daughter.
“It’s a sad moment when it comes to a 5-year-old child, who we are investigating. A child who has done absolutely nothing wrong,” said Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor.
Investigators tracked Williams to a motel in Phenix, Alabama, a neighboring town just across the river from Kamarie’s Columbus home.
Sheriff Taylor told reporters at a news conference Tuesday about 30 minutes before police arrived.
The police chief said officers went to an empty house in the city of Phenix where Williams used to live and found Kamarie’s body showing signs of sexual abuse.
The girl was presumed dead at 11:15 a.m. on the same day, she went missing and suffocation is believed to have been the cause of her death.
Kamarie’s mother knew Williams even though the sheriff said the two were not dating.
The suspect’s uncle is not believed to be an accessory to the crime.
Investigators arrested Williams on suspicion of murder, an allegation involving victims under the age of 14.
The sheriff said the investigation is still ongoing to see if others were involved in Kamarie’s death.
“There are a lot of details that I’m not willing to reveal at the moment,” he said. “Because of the urgency in this case and other potential people we may consider as suspects or offenders alongside Mr Williams.”
The sheriff declined to say what led investigators in Columbus to identify Williams as a suspect, although he did detail previous charges against him.
Williams was charged with abusing a child in the city of Phenix in 2009 before being acquitted by a grand jury in 2012, sheriff Taylor said.
He’s also been charged with abusing a child in Columbus, and is suspected in the death of a one-year-old in Alaska, according to the sheriff.
He said the status of the case in Columbus was unknown and the charge was dropped in Alaska because of a lack of evidence.
MAY HAVE A LOT OF CHARGES
Williams was charged with murder in the city of Phenix, where the case will be heard.
He could face cohabitation without parole or the death penalty if found guilty.
Additional charges, including murder during kidnapping and rape, are likely, according to the sheriff, according to the sheriff.
He said the investigation was far from over.
