Both Season 2 and Season 3 (the final season) of Apple TV+’s “Dickinson” are set to air in 2021, which means 18 episodes featuring legendary American poet Emily Dickinson, played by Hailee Steinfeld. One of the best storylines is the forbidden love between Emily and her best friend Sue Gilbert (Ella Hunt), who also happens to be engaged to Emily’s brother Austin (Adrian Blake Enscoe). We first saw Emily and Sue kiss in the movie that came out in 2019, when Emily asked Sue to promise to love her more than Austin, who proposed.
Although Sue married and became pregnant with Austin, she and Emily remained soul mates. During the season 3 premiere, Sue told Emily that she wished they could run away together and raise her baby as a family unit. But even with an imaginative sequence in the show’s final episode giving us one last look at Emily and Sue together, Emily still seems to focus on her writing above all else, including Sue. This is consistent with reality, as Dickinson is said to have been a recluse during her later adult life. If they hadn’t lived in the 19th century, their love would have developed differently, but no matter how their love unfolds, it’s clearly a strong and complex bond that women female share.
