With the warmer days finally here, avid gardeners have a long list of to-dos they need to get done on time.
To make life a little easier, a gardening genius shared the top six things you need to do to ensure your outdoor space is ready for summer.
Speaking to Express, gardening guru Chris Bonnett of GardeningExpress.co.uk explained that April is the time of year when our green spaces really “come to life”.
“It’s also a month of hard work getting the garden ready and ready for the warmer weather.
“Our tips will help beginning gardeners focus on what they need to do now so they can enjoy the fruits of their labor in the months to come.”
With April just around the corner, these are the tasks that need to be done.
FIX THE LAWN
Most gardens and lawns are often neglected during the harsh winter months – so April is a good time to show them some much-needed love and care.
Chris said that the coming month of April is the perfect time to fix it.
“If you haven’t already cut the lawn for the first time, now is the time to do so, but keep the mowing height on the high side.
”Either renew the lawn or sow lawn seed for all bare patches.”
A must for the ultimate brunch staple, Eggs Benedict, chives are also planted in the sunny month of April.
“Try planting chives and other herbs and letting them germinate on a sunny windowsill or in the greenhouse,” the whiz kid said.

He added, “Be sure to sow them sparingly and thin them out when overcrowded.”
No summer meal is complete without a delicious salad full of juicy tomatoes or a bowl of refreshing gazpacho.
And according to Chris, April is the perfect time to sow her seeds.
He also warned keen gardeners to “keep an eye on conditions” and instructed to slowly introduce plants to outside temperatures.
This is because tomatoes tend to thrive in warmer weather.
Anyone struggling with sleep and relaxation will know the powerful magic of the dreamy lavender scent.
If you’re one of those in need of a natural remedy for insomnia and stress, this flower is a must-have in your garden—and April is the time to plant it.
“The soil is warm enough in April for new lavender plants to thrive.
“It helps to start with a healthy plant with a pre-developed root system and plant one to three feet apart depending on the variety.”
Avid gardeners will know what a holy grail mulch is — mulching soil not only saves water and improves soil quality, it also suppresses pesky weeds, Chris explained.
“April is the best time to apply it as the unpredictable weather means it locks in moisture from the rain but prevents beds from drying out in the sun.”
START SPRAYING ROSES
Along with lilies and peonies, roses are among the most popular flowers that can be found in almost every garden.
While these delicate flowers are beautiful to look at, they also require a lot of maintenance and it is important to spray them.
“When new leaves appear, it’s time to spray your roses,” Chris said.
”Keep doing this throughout the summer months to avoid common rose problems.”
