Disney’s 2009 animated film “Princess and the Frog” shows how Disney can emulate their characters after their actors voice them. In the film, Anika Noni Rose voices Tiana, a waitress with dreams of opening her own restaurant, who becomes entangled with a voodoo curse after she kisses a frog transformed by a prince.
Prior to “Princess and the Frog,” Rose performed her incredible vocals in “Dreamgirls” and in the Broadway production of “Caroline, or Change,” which earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress. in musicals (via Playbill). She went on to star in films such as “For Colored Girls”, “Everything, Everything” and most recently starred in the hit Netflix series “Helper” (every IMDb).
Her time playing Tiana proves to be a more enduring role for her as she has voiced several other Disney projects featuring the character. In an interview with Everyone, Rose recounts her feelings when playing the first Black Disney princess. She said, “It’s a great legacy to be the first. I feel like because of how much people still love Tiana, everyone’s minds have been opened to other things. .”
However, it doesn’t look like Rose will be taking down her Disney crown anytime soon. According to the actor of Instagram, she will return as the Disney princess in the upcoming Disney+ series, “Tiana”, which is scheduled for release in 2023.
