arcane, is at its core the story of two sisters, Vi and Jinx. Based on League of Legends by Riot Games, arcane reveals the sisters’ traumatic childhoods, their forced separation from one another, and the unfolding of their paradoxical journeys apart. It’s a compelling story that has captured the hearts of League of Legend players and non-players alike.
The differences between the utopian “City of Progress,” Piltover, and the dystopian undercity now called Zaun, deepen as tensions mount, accompanied by corrupt police officers, the exploitation of the poor, and a deep resentment between the two sides.
Through incredible storytelling and character development, arcane also addresses mental health problems caused by socioeconomic status, environment, and trauma.
Most Hated Arcane Characters
Filled with detailed lore and complex dynamics, arcane has a variety of characters that we love and hate. So, without further ado, here are the five most hated characters arcane.
Sevika is Silco’s second-in-command, the mechanically modified and shimmer-enhanced secondary antagonist in arcane. Fans have mixed feelings for her, but due to her treatment and her eagerness to get rid of a fan-favorite character, Jinx, opinions are more negative. She largely lacks compassion and tenderness, and her goals align with killing many innocents for a larger picture.
Ambessa Medarda is Mel’s mother. She is a warlord from Noxus with self-serving ambitions. Being exposed to death at a young age shaped her mentality. She is a product of her early childhood environment. Because of this, she intended to make Mel a tough leader who understands that war is a necessary principle for progress. Her intransigence for war and indifference to death and merciless killings caused her two children, Kino and Mel, to prefer the path of diplomacy, which she disagreed with.
She denied and sent Mel away for that simple fact.
“Because you weakened me! I couldn’t stand the look in your eyes whenever I made the decisions—the decisions necessary to protect us!” – Ambessa to Melin arcane Season 1, Episode 9: “The Monster You Created”.
Mel Medarda is an aristocratic politician and a very influential councilor in Piltover. She advocates that war is not the solution to progress, and as such has been disowned by her Noxian mother and the Medarda clan, as has her brother Kino.
“Kino said war is a failure of statesmanship.” – Mel to Ambessa in arcane Season 1, Episode 8: ‘Oil and water’.
Despite believing her mother to be the same, she has self-serving ambitions in which she uses Jayce as a vessel for personal gain. Fans love her character design, as evidenced by the awards arcane was nominated and won for Mel’s design in particular. However, her selfishness and manipulation of Jayce is what makes some fans strongly dislike her. In her desperate attempts to be different from her mother, she fails because she too uses any means to achieve what she wants.
Jayce Tails is now chairman of the Piltover Council. From a young boy experiencing life-saving magic, he grew into an advanced scientist and innovator, nearly banished by Piltover for his “dangerous” experiments. So he’s an effective contributor to his society, right? Why is he so hated? Simple answer is Jayce has done many things that ruin his sympathy. His mother saved him from banishment, and instead of thanking her, he stormed away from her and treated her harshly. Jayce also showed his true prejudice against Undercity when he scolded his science partner Viktor for going there to ask a friend for help. He didn’t even listen to Viktor’s reason, which is a sense of neglect.
“Well, you didn’t say they were from Undercity! … They are dangerous.” – Jayce in to Viktor arcaneSeason 1, Episode 7: “The Young Savior.”
Viktor quickly replies that he’s from Undercity, to which Jayce quickly apologizes. This scene shows that Jayce doesn’t really see Viktor as an equal. This creates even more hatred for Jayce, as Viktor is the one who saved him from his suicidal thoughts – by intervening at just the right moment before jumping out of his old workshop building.
Here is our most hated character arcane. Marcus was a bigoted, ardent supporter of Piltover’s dominance, particularly over Zaun, the Undercity. He was an abusive and corrupt police officer who neglected his duty as he succumbed to the temptation of his vices – making a name for himself and making money. If we take a closer look at the butterfly effect shown in arcane, it is through Marcus’ involvement with Zaun’s crime boss, Silco, that led Jinx to believe that Vi had left her with no intention of returning. By capturing Vi, he has caused a lot of trauma by separating the two sisters. and so played a hand in the creation of the chaos-loving, wreaking havoc, Zaunite criminal Jinx.
Marcus and Jayce’s hatred, prejudice, and generally negative attitude towards Undercity paves the way for liking one of Undercity’s most popular characters arcane, Caitlin. She, too, was born and raised in Piltover, but displays the compassion, tenderness, and trust that Piltover officials lack. Stay tuned for the five fan-favorite characters from arcane.
