The 17-year-old teenager, who was found dead at Walgreens, issued a powerful warning weeks before her tragic death

A TEENAGE girl found dead on a Walgreens Saturday may have issued warnings against the man suspected of taking her life.

Riley Whitelaw, 17, was killed at a Colorado Springs store over the weekend, leading to the arrest of her colleague Joshua Taylor Johnson, 28, on Sunday.

An affidavit claimed Whitelaw complained to her manager at Walgreens in 2021 that Johnson had “made progress on her” and made her uncomfortable.

Another colleague said that Johnson “appeared to be jealous” when Whitelaw’s boyfriend started working at Walgreens a few months ago.

The teenager had even asked to work other hours so she wouldn’t have to be around Johnson in the weeks leading up to her death, according to the affidavit.

However, Whitelaw was told she would have to work with Johnson if she wanted to change her hours.

On June 11, one of Whitelaw’s managers noticed that she had not returned from her break around 5:30 p.m. and began searching for her.

After looking through security cameras, Johnson was seen piling trash cans in what appeared to be an attempt to block the camera’s view, according to the affidavit.

The manager told police that someone had taped up windows in the break room and put up a sign saying “toilet closed” to “keep people out,” which the manager found odd during business hours.

Whitelaw’s body was found by the store manager in the break room around 7:00 p.m.

The teenager had neck injuries and the floor was covered in blood. Her employee ID and walkie-talkie were found near her feet.

A customer at the store told police at the time that she thought she heard stalls slamming shut around 5:45 p.m.

Johnson was arrested by the Colorado State Patrol the next day while walking down a freeway.

Troopers asked Johnson about the scratch marks on his hands, and he claimed he was assaulted at a Walgreens in Colorado Springs.

During an interview with law enforcement, Johnson admitted he had a crush on Whitelaw at one point, but no more.

He stated that he was in the break room and “fell in the blood” and went home to change.

Johnson is currently being held in the El Paso County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 21.

Dan Olson, the principal of the Air Academy high school that Whitelaw attended, released a statement following news of her death.

“Losing a classmate and friend is incredibly difficult, and students can have worries, questions and high emotions. They can be sad, depressed or even angry. That’s why in moments like this we need to come together and create something. Please keep the AAHS family in your thoughts and hearts during this difficult time,” Olson said.

The school plans to provide grief counselors for students for an indefinite period.

Students from the school and other members of the community began leaving flowers at Walgreens where Whitelaw was killed.

A vigil was planned at the school for Whitelaw, where organizers asked the community to bring photos and items to remind them of her.
