The 14-year-old cowboy dies after being thrown and trampled on the chest by a bull during his first rodeo ride
A teenage cowboy has died after being thrown by a bull at his first-ever rodeo.
Denim Bradshaw, 14, went into cardiac arrest after being trampled on by the animal in North Carolina on Saturday.
Rafter K Rodeo Co – who helped organize the event in King – confirmed the tragic news on Sunday on their Facebook page, saying “words cannot describe the pain felt”.
They added: “Our sport is truly a family and we are so grateful to everyone who has been there to help.
“We are grateful for our paramedics, paramedics and local law enforcement who are working so hard to take care of the Cowboys.
“This is a tragic event and words cannot describe the pain felt at this loss. We ask everyone to come together and pray for his family for comfort and healing at this difficult time.”
Pictures from the scene show cowboys with their heads bowed and Stetsons removed.
The teenager’s heartbroken mother, Shannon Bowman, said her son was “so happy” the night before the event.
She wrote on Facebook: “Last night was the longest night of my life!!
“My beautiful, handsome 14-year-old son… went to the Lord! I woke up in a nightmare for the rest of my life!
“I hate myself for that call but he loved every second of it. I [had] I’ve never seen him so happy as he was last night before he left.”
The devastated mum added: “Denim baby you did it!! You did it!! I am so proud of your bravery and courage!
“My little cowboy, I will love and miss you so much and I know that God will take care of you.”
Denim is said to have been thrown out of the bull just after 8pm on Saturday night.
He was found unconscious in the ring by first responders.
The teenager was pronounced dead at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital later that evening.
A GoFundMe account that raised money to help with funeral expenses had donations of more than $8,000 as of Monday morning.
The site’s author confirmed that the rodeo was Demin’s first, adding, “Denim dived into the world of bull riding and fell in love. The boots, the cowboy hats, and those big belt buckles—he loved them all.
“He got to ride his first bull on January 28th and his excitement was palatable.
“None of us could have believed that that first ride would cause his death and we are beyond devastated.
“Our sweet 14 year old boy lost his life at the most exciting moment of his short life and we are now lost without him.”
“He was a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle and a friend to all who were lucky enough to know him,” the page added.
“We try to take comfort in knowing that he died with something he loved, surrounded by friends and family.
