Earlier that day, the middle school student spoke to another student about plans to carry out an armed robbery, local news station WWMT reported.

“He asked another student which gas station was the least secure, and he allegedly invented the marathon,” said Michael Prince, Lt. Hartford Police Department, to the media.

The startling comments were only brought to the attention of authorities after the gas station robbery.

According to WWMT, the suspect’s classmate “didn’t take the boy seriously” when discussing the plans.

Law enforcement also say the gun used in the robbery came from the boy’s grandfather, who is his legal guardian, and told officers he was unaware he had access to the safe.

According to news reports, the gun was locked in a safe, but he somehow managed to gain access.

The boy dropped out of school and went home to change before returning to the area to rob the gas station.

“It seems he was able to get the code and get it,” Prince told local CBS affiliate.

The teenage robber made off with $5,000 in cash, which the clerk placed in his backpack.

He managed to get away from the gas station but was arrested by cops just a few blocks away.

He is currently being held at the Allegan County Juvenile Center.

The saleswoman told News Channel 3 that at first she thought it was all a joke.

“I thought he was a kid, not even 10 years old,” Jessica said.

Lisa Riley, who lives in the area, told the outlet that she is familiar with the boy because two years ago he shot her with a BB gun while she was mowing the lawn.

“He had no emotions. I just don’t think he knows how to show emotion,” Riley said.

The incident comes amid a wave of teenagers who have threatened shootings in public places.

Just last week, a 10-year-old boy in Florida was arrested for threatening to mass shoot him days after the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
