‘That result is for Ole’

MICHAEL CARRICK has dedicated Manchester United’s win at Villarreal to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the club legend’s emotional departure.

The Red Devils have secured their spot in the Champions League round of 16 with a Win 2-0 in Spain in Carrick’s first game in charge.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho both scored late to ensure United took all three points.

And Carrick was quick to acknowledge Solskjaer’s impact after stepping down as caretaker manager got off to a winning start.

After the game, Carrick told BT Sport: “We came here to win, I believe we will.

“We were ready and it was a tough game. The boys trained and showed a little bit of everything.

“Honestly, I don’t think anyone can expect to come out here and play beautiful football.

“When you’ve endured wise results and you’re not in great form, it’s not easy to step out and let things begin.

“We have to dig deep and we have to fight.

Carrick concluded: “I enjoyed it very much. It was not an easy few days for everyone at the club and I could have enjoyed it a lot.

“But it looks like that result is for Ole and I can’t get away with that.

“We had a job to do and fortunately, all went according to plan.”

Regarding his first goal, Carrick was delighted: “Fred did a great job and got that ball back.

“Ronaldo when he got the chance, he left it.”

Speaking about the second goal – Sancho’s first at Man Utd after a £73m summer transfer – Carrick continued: “Jadon scored that goal was amazing.

“I know how Jadon likes the ball at his feet. He’s worked hard defending and he deserves it.”

Despite the solid start, neither Rio Ferdinand nor Paul Scholes – both former Manchester United teammates of Carrick – do not believe the caretaker manager will continue to be permanent.

Scholes – who stab Carrick for not giving up after Solskjaer’s rise – told BT Sport: “Michael Carrick – he’s a coach.

“He’s had one game as a manager, with no experience anywhere else.

“No matter how much I like the guy, they can’t give him a job.

“They need what’s best, whether it’s the best available in the interim, or the best available full-time.”

Ferdinand added: “I don’t think they’ll give it to Michael until the end of the season.

“One thing for sure in my mind is that they are actively looking for someone to replace and become the interim manager to get us through to the end of the season.

“And they will be looking for someone else to replace the reins next summer.

“Man Utd now have to make inquiries. If you want a specific manager to be working, those conversations would be happening now.”
