Irma Garcia died protecting her students
Irma Garcia was a married mother of four and taught at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas for 23 years.
In 2019, she was nominated for Teacher of the Year by the Uvalde Independent School District and was named a finalist out of 19 teachers in the San Antonio area for a Trinity University award recognizing excellence in teaching.
NBC News reported that Garcia’s son said a friend who works in law enforcement was at the scene and saw Garcia shielding her students.
Garcia’s nephew, John, shared the news of her death on Facebook in the early hours of May 25.
He wrote: “My Tia didn’t make it, she sacrificed herself to protect the children in her classroom, I ask that you keep my family, including her whole family, in your prayers.
“IRMA GARCIA IS HER NAME and she died a HERO. She was loved by many and will be truly missed.”
