Terry Shaffer, Former Sheriff of Shanksville Fire, Responded on 9/11, Needs New Hearts – CBS Pittsburgh

SOMERSET COUNTY (KDKA) – Tower of Voices commemorates the 40 lives lost after terrorists hijacked and crashed Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

It welcomes visitors to the Flight 93 Memorial; a site that Terry Shaffer supports.

“It’s about people who have lost their lives,” his daughter, Rebecca Kuzar, said.

Former director of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department was one of the first to respond after the plane crashed on that tragic day.

“I’m sure he never expected such a call. We’ve never done that,” said firefighter Brad Shober.

When federal agencies moved in, Shaffer and his firefighters worked on evidence gathering and other supporting roles in the investigation.

“He’s just trying to do his job well. He didn’t really talk about it much because he was so emotional,” said Kuzar.

Terry continued to hold the position of chief until a few years ago. His doctors said he should stop because of health concerns.

“No one has spent more time with this fire station or cared for this fire station over the past 25 years than Terry Shaffer,” said Shober.

That hasn’t stopped Shaffer from being the heart of Shanksville. He currently holds the position of chairman of the fire department.

“He was always thinking and doing for others,” Kuzar said of her father.

Now, Terry is bouncing in and out of the hospital with a heart condition.

“You feel powerless from that aspect. It’s a wait and see until that moment comes,” Shober said.

Terry was not on the list of transplants in November. Doctors said this was the only way to help his heart problems. Family and friends are raising money to cover what insurance won’t do.

“He’s very limited in what he can do,” Kuzar said. “It was heartbreaking to see that. It’s hard to see someone you love so sick.”

“The whistle blew, our pager went off and we went to help someone. It’s our nature and that’s the way things are,” Shober said of his former head. “At this point, the whistle blows for the community to stand up and help Terry.”
