An ARMY helicopter fell violently from the sky and crashed into an urban area, killing four people tonight.
A video posted online shows the horrifying moment when a helicopter belonging to the Colombian National Army goes out of control and crashes to the ground with a puff of smoke.
The horrific moment is captured by onlookers in the town of Quibdó from their window as they scream and scream in response to the rapidly falling helicopter.
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro confirmed the accident on Twitter around 8 p.m. and stated that emergency services were on their way to the crash site.
“A few minutes ago, an army helicopter crashed in Quibdó while carrying out supply tasks.
“I have ordered the authorities to go to the area immediately.”
Shortly thereafter also President Petro passed the message: “It is with regret that I have to report that there were no survivors of the plane crash in Quibdó.”
He told the families of the four service members who died that he would accompany them at “this painful moment”.
“We will not leave her alone.”
No reason has currently been given as to why the National Army helicopter crashed.
Local media reported it was a UH-1N helicopter conducting a resupply operation near the town of Quibdó in the Chocó region of western Colombia.
The UN-1N model “is recognized for conducting highly effective security missions,” according to BluRadio.
Two pilots and two crew members were killed.
One of the victims of the crash was Lieutenant Julieth García – reportedly the first military woman to complete the UN-1N helicopter pilot course.
She was killed along with soldiers Hector Jerez, Johan Orozco and Ruben Leguizamon.
