Earlier, Katie’s pal Alex de Minaur, 23, had advanced to the second round with a straight-set win over Bolivian Hugo Dellien.

And while they’re both still chasing a championship trophy, they insist they’re not overly competitive in their relationship.

Leicester-born Katie said yesterday she was “very fortunate” to have a boyfriend who understands the pressures of competition.

She said: “He is so supportive of the work I do and understands me completely.

“Not many do that. Having that kind of connection where they know what you’re going through, they know the ups and downs, it feels very comforting. I’m lucky to have him.”

The pair have been supporting each other in the run-up to the tournament, with Katie saying she loves waking up every day knowing she’s in the “good vibes” of their relationship.

She said: “He’s been a really big support to me in the tough moments being in the gym with me as I’m doing rehab for the start of that latest injury.”

Alex said: “We both have similar lifestyles.

“We both struggled with the same things at times. I guess we both would prefer not to do the sport because that way we could probably see each other more, but that’s the nature of the game and we get along pretty well on that.

“We know all the doubts and thoughts in the processes that we both go through and we just try to be there for each other whether we win, lose or draw. That’s probably the most important thing.”

Elsewhere at SW19, Brits Jay Clarke, Paul Jubb, Katie Swan and Sonay Kartal were knocked out yesterday.

But Heather Watson won her match against Tamara Korpatsch, which has been going on since Monday evening. She broke down in tears and said, “It’s a relief to get over the line.”

Emma Raducanu plays Caroline Garcia from France this afternoon.
