About 100 people rushed to the scene around 2 p.m. to look for survivors.
One person – who was injured in the horror – was rescued, local police say.
The Austrian Press Agency (APA) later confirmed that the rescuers had requested headlamps to continue the search in the dark.
Pictures taken near the scene of the crime show dozens of rescue workers on a mountain road in Vorarlberg.
Mountain rescue dog teams are also involved in the search.
“We do everything to save the winter sports enthusiasts,” the APA quoted the Lech community as saying.
The resort’s website states that the ski area is now closed, an update is planned for Monday morning.
Lech describes itself as “one of the best ski areas in the world” for alpine sports enthusiasts.
