Teenager, 19, charged with murder after the hero who once rescued a drowning man from the river was stabbed to death outside Betfred

A 19-YEAR-OLD has been charged in connection with the death of Stephen “Cookie” Cook.
Exeter’s Brian Jewell has been charged with murder following the death of the heroic 45-year-old.

The 19-year-old was arrested and remains in police custody.
He is due to appear before Exeter Magistrate’s Court today, January 31.
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “A man has been charged in connection with the death of Stephen Cook, 45, from Exeter following an incident on Sidwell Street on the evening of January 28.”
Stephen Cook, “Cookie”, was a very popular father of two and a familiar face in the area as he was homeless.
He is known for once bravely rescuing a man from drowning in the River Exe.
Tributes have been poured in since the 45-year-old’s death, with teddy bears, flowers, sweets and poems laid outside the Beftred betting shop on Sidwell Street.
Police had previously arrested a 29-year-old woman from Exeter, a 32-year-old man from Exmouth and a 19-year-old on suspicion of fighting.
They have since been released on bail and will appear in court on April 27.
