A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after fatally shooting a 5-year-old boy in Brooklyn Park while filming a video to post on social media.
The teen was arrested Friday morning and is currently being held at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center in Minnesota.
According to Mark Bruley, deputy director of Brooklyn Park, Mr. Mark Bruley, the young man is related to the boy, but the two are not brothers.
Police were called to a home on the 8000 block of N. Florida Avenue to a shooting that left a child injured around 10:20 p.m. Thursday.
Police found the boy with a single shot to the head.
Bruley said many attempts were made to save the boy’s life but were unsuccessful.
The 13-year-old along with a number of other minors entered the mansion to handle a gun to record a video on social media.
Bruley added that at some point, the 13-year-old boy accidentally fired a gun, causing the bullet to hit the victim.
Bruley said: “This is a very unfortunate accident, which requires a very detailed investigation, which is currently underway.
Another 13-year-old, an eight-year-old and another five-year-old were also present in the room.
The adults were home at the time of the shooting, but it’s unclear who was supervising them and how they accessed the weapon.
According to Bruley, police can prosecute a crime if they discover the owner of the gun did not lock it properly.
The shooting is still under investigation.
A neighbor with a small child told me CBS Minnesota She feels for the victim’s family but also for the 13-year-old, whose life has now changed forever.
“I’m sure it was an accident, you know, I’m sure he was freaking out,” she said. “He was only a child so now he is losing his life and the 5-year-old has lost his life.”
This year, five people, including the child, were fatally shot in Brooklyn Park.
Nearly 130 shootings and 23 gunshot wounds have been reported, according to the city’s website.
In 2020, two people were killed by guns, 38 people were trapped and 102 shootings were recorded.
“We are seeing a record number of shootings, gun calls, shootings in the streets – violence unlike anything we have ever seen before in relation to this,” said Bruley. weapons and guns,” Bruley said. “It seems (accidental shootings) are emerging because we regularly get calls regarding guns, shots being fired, whether it’s intentional or accidental or otherwise.”
