COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Southwest Florida and now, it’s omicrons.

Dr David Lindner has been monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic for the past two years. Now that the omicron variant is pushed to the forefront, he shares new information with his team at NCH and with WINK News.

David Lindner is the director of the NCH COVID-19 task force. “We are seeing an increasing number of cases. We see people who are experiencing breakthrough infections, post-COVID infections, and post-vaccine infections,” Lindner said.

People who have not received COVID-19 or any vaccine are at greatest risk of contracting this contagious strain. Many people want to know the effectiveness of the vaccine in people who have been fully vaccinated and vaccinated.

“MRNA vaccines seem to work much better by 50 to 85 percent, depending on the data. So they seem to be the best against it,” said Dr. Lindner.

People also want to know what impact the new FDA-approved antiviral pill might have on the omicron variant. “There are some new treatments coming soon. The oral drugs have been… effective. And these are slightly more effective against coronaviruses, so it’s very hopeful,” said Dr.

There is no local virus sequencing, so local doctors now assume all cases are of the omicron variant. “The important thing to be asked is ‘does that change what I do for them with that?’ I would not treat an omicron patient differently than I would treat a delta patient,” Lindner said.

One small difference between omicron variation and delta variation is that people with omicrons have less loss of taste and smell.
