‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 2: Helen’s Tragic Twist – Heather Headley

Helen Decatur has always been the strongest woman in Serenity, and that strength has been tested in more ways than one of the Sweet Magnolias‘ season two.

Take Band-Aid apart and dive into Helen’s most painful trial: Just two episodes after sharing the good news of her pregnancy with the other Magnolias, Helen miscarries. It was a devastating turn of events, one that finally helped Helen focus clearly on exactly what she wanted out of life.

“It’s hard, but it’s a discussion that a lot of people – husbands, wives, boyfriends, couples – don’t discuss,” Heather Headley told TVLine. “Nobody knows what to say, so we don’t talk about it. I like that it’s still intact and there for her, because it’s so devastating. She is getting old and wants to have children, and now she is finally having children with the man she has always wanted to have children with. (Whether she told him or not, she didn’t care. It was going to happen.) And then it was ripped from her. It gets messy and tragic, but God bless the friends who show up when you need it.”

And God bless that voice. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning actress finally got a chance to show off her pipes this season, starting with a premiere with a brief performance of “It Is Well” at the hospital. But the host was actually saved for Episode 6 when Helen and Erik treated their inner ring with a karaoke performance of Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About”.

“We tried to find a way [work music into the show]and I remember asking the producers, ‘How? Good Does Helen sing? ‘ said Headley. “Does she have a deaf accent, or… has she been on Broadway? They were like, “She can sing pretty well,” so I said, “Okay, I’ll put her somewhere in between.”

But as those who have seen the performance can attest, it was anything but average. Headley totally gets to show her element on that stage, even if her singing partner doesn’t necessarily share her confidence at first.

“Poor Dion [Johnstone] was very nervous about it,” she said with a laugh. “He asked, ‘Should we rehearse?’ And I said, ‘You don’t practice karaoke! Do not worry about that. ‘ It was so much fun, and I love that it happened so cleverly. I wasn’t the only one who got into the song and people wondered where that voice came from.”

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 SpoilersOK, now let’s talk about big moment. You know one of these. The kneeling, ringed final fighter will drive fans crazy until the show (fingers crossed!) returns for Season 3. It was a real shock for Helen, and perhaps even more. more than that for Headley.

“I remember reading the script, turning the page, and wondering, ‘What happened then? Oh, it is I this time. Oh no! ‘” Headley recalls discovering that her character was at the heart of the season finale. “I remember how much people yelled at me, even during the social distancing pandemic, after the car accident. ‘You can’t leave us like this!’ And now it’s about me! These people will throw me in the street. “

Headley is fully aware of the “both Team Erik, Team Ryan” thing, but she really sees the good in both of them. With Ryan, Helen “had the thick mud of a relationship, just a love relationship. They have loved each other since they were young. Every time they leave each other, they come right back. These people know each other inside and out.” But Erik, in addition to being a great karaoke partner, “could be a great man. And I’m sure he’s ready to be a father. He presents all of that.” However, Headley can see her character “going either way,” so she’s still on “Team Helen” first.
