According to Morales, the dots started connecting on Tuesday when a witness flagged down the 400 SW 2 Avenue area at 8 p.m. about a person with blunt force trauma to the head.

Nearly two hours later, another victim was found dead of a gunshot wound in the area of Miami Avenue and 21st Street.

Morales said detectives connected the two incidents because of the short span of time and the fact that both victims were homeless.

The department’s criminal investigation unit began scouring the area for physical and electronic evidence.

Video on Miami Avenue shows a black vehicle slamming into one of the victims lying on the ground and shooting him multiple times.

Officers can find out the vehicle type and tag number from the surveillance video.

Tactical robbery units were then able to contact the vehicle and the suspect, who was in possession of a firearm matching the caliber used in both crimes.

Morales said the department’s federal partners helped articulate the ballistics from the two incidents.

The suspect was then taken to the station for further investigation.

At the station, Morales said, a lead investigator noticed the suspect resembled someone wanted on October 16 murder charges.

In that case, a homeless victim was gruesomely murdered on Miami Avenue and 1st Street.

Morales is pleading for the public’s help to help connect the December 21 crime with the October crime.

He also asked local law enforcement agencies to share any similar crimes if they are also linked.

Morales said Suarez Maceo will be charged with murder as well as attempted murder for the crimes committed Tuesday.

The details surrounding the alleged crimes of Suarez Maceo drew a response from Ron Book, president of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.
