Sunderland will hand transfer money to Tony Mowbray in January if he manages to keep them in the Prem Promotion hunt

SUNDERLAND are set to give boss Tony Mowbray money for a couple of signings if he keeps the club in the battle for promotion.

Mowbray was late to affect deals in the last window while the Black Cats snapped up emerging talent.

That strategy may change if Mowbray believes old minds would make a difference.

But Sunderland could be forced to replace striker Ross Stewart as Blackburn eye a move for the 26-year-old Scot.

Rovers considered a move for Stewart in the last window and were able to offer him the contract they wanted.

Stewart’s deal is up and new boss Mowbray will be keen to extend his stay rather than lose a star.

However, Rovers are lurking and Sunderland may not be able to pin him down.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are planning a £2.5million raid on Sunderland super-teen midfielder Chris Rigg.

The England youth ace, 15, plays for clubs and countries and is considered the UK’s top young talent.

Impressing the Black Cats Under-21 side, he recently captained a Young Lions game in Italy.

Sunderland are keen to keep Rigg but the demand for him is so great they may find that difficult.

If he allows himself to be poached, the transfer fee demanded is inevitably a record for a player of his age.

Everton have been after Rigg for months but may not be ready to go high enough with their offer.
