Sun Protection Act to change sunrise and sunset times if Daylight Saving Time is made permanent

The Sun Protection Act could change sunrise and sunset times – and make Daylight Saving Time permanent from 2023.
The new bill was passed by the Senate on Tuesday by unanimous consent.
Under the proposed law, Americans would no longer have to change their watches twice a year.
Instead, daylight saving time will become a permanent fixture, with sunset occurring after 5 p.m. consistently in most parts of the United States.
“We’ve passed the Senate, and the clock is ticking to get the job done so we never have to turn the clocks again,” Senator Patty Murray said on the Senate floor.
“So I urge my colleagues in the House to act as quickly as the Senate – let’s get this bill started. President Biden’s table and bring more sunshine to Americans around the country. “

“It’s time for Congress to pass our bipartisan legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent and brighten the coldest months with an extra hour of afternoon sunshine,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, co-sponsor of the act, tweeted.
The bill is now headed to the House. But it is unclear whether or when, the House leadership will push the legislation to hold a vote.
If passed, the bill will be sent to President Joe Biden.
Save time during the day began in 1918 in an effort to generate more daylight hours during the Spring and Summer months to conserve energy. But research has never proven that saving more electricity during daylight saving time.
It did not become the national standard until the 1960s. In 2007, it was extended by four weeks.
However, not all states follow daylight saving time, as it is optional.
Hawaii and parts of Arizona do not observe it. So, under the proposed law, those states and any other states that didn’t previously observe daylight saving time would choose their standard time.
Passage of legislation could have a positive impact on the collective health of Americans.
Sleep experts often recommend maintaining a consistent sleep schedule for health purposes. But daylight saving time tends to disrupt that.
Not to mention the fact that researchers in 1999 discovered a significant increase in car crashes on the Monday after daylight saving time began, presumably due to insomnia.
Studies show that even missing an hour of sleep can have a negative impact on health and can lead to insomnia and other health problems.

While some states have passed legislation in the hope of operating in daylight saving time year-round, federal law must be changed first.
If passed, the Sun Protection Act would allow states to make the change permanent.
