For several seasons, Will Byers’ sexuality has been a popular topic of conversation among fans of stranger things. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently confirmed that the topic will be covered in stranger things Season 4 volume 2.
Fans first began to wonder if Will could be part of the LGBTQIA+ community in his second season (his first real on-screen season, considering he was stuck in the Upside Down for most of the first season). He’s one of the few characters on the show who never had a love interest, and unlike his best friends Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, Will never had a girlfriend.
The “will is gay” theories only grew after the premiere of stranger things Season 4 Volume 1 where Will’s attitude towards Mike hinted that he had a crush on his longtime pal. The cast has also hinted at the possibility of a love triangle between Mike, Will and Eleven.
Stranger Things: Is Will Byers Gay?
Will is still figuring out his sexuality and hasn’t tagged himself yet, but the show has strongly suggested that he’s anything other than straight. In an interview with Variety, Will’s actor Noah Schnapp spoke about his character’s direction, saying he felt it “needed audience interpretation.”
I feel like they never really address or openly say what Will is like. I think that’s the beauty of it, it’s just up to the audience’s interpretation, whether Will just refuses to grow up and grows slower than his friends, or whether he really is gay.
Understandably, fans were frustrated by this sort of non-response, which feels similar to how Disney has dealt with its gay characters over the years — essentially with wink-and-you-miss-it moments or throwaway one-liners may be point out something more.
But I feel like we can loosen up the Duffer Brothers a little bit since they introduced a real lesbian character last season with the introduction of Robin. Robin isn’t “out” yet, but she’s discussed her sexuality more openly than Will, so it’s not as if the show is completely devoid of gay representation.
What can we expect from Will Byers in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2?
Speaking to TVLine, the Duffer Brothers said they would not yet confirm if Schnapp’s character is gay as the entire season has not yet been released, but assured fans they would watch the last two episodes of stranger things Season 4 they will get answers one way or another. I expect we’ll finally find out what Will drew for Mike in Volume 2, and maybe this gives us our biggest clue yet!
Here’s what Ross Duffer said on the subject:
We have story arcs and we have character arcs. How we structured [the season], we have published the first two acts of this story. The final act, which is the last two episodes, resolves a lot of things, both character and story, and some of that sets the stage for our final season as well.
stranger things Season 4 Volume 2 will be released on July 1st. The first half of the latest season is now available on Netflix.
