Nunez has taken his time adjusting to life at Liverpool, albeit with brilliant flashes, since his £85million move from Benfica.
After the Uruguayan was compared to Cole by a fan on social media, the 51-year-old spoke up.
He tweeted: “Cole…,Nunez…not sure we (sic) started this nonsense!!!
“But it’s Christmas 🎄 the festival season… I’m happily retired…
“Five PL (titles), 2 FA Cups. 1 League Cup. 1 Champions League.
The fan went out of his way to stress that he hadn’t meant to be disrespectful to Cole and that he was just trying to support Nunez.
But Cole had none of it.
He added: “Sorry Dave phrased it wrong or right….
“People need to stop disrespecting my name…because I’m not playing the game just a quiet guy moving on with life people think they can’t respect me 🤷🏾♂️….
“Look at the numbers and compare them to someone else…”
Cole’s 187 prem goal tally puts him fourth on the all-time list – behind only Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane.
He won five Premier League titles with Man United and played a key role in the treble-winning side in 1999.
Nunez has missed a number of key opportunities for the Reds this season.
After a string of blunders in Thursday’s 3-2 defeat by Manchester City, Nunez was mocked by many fans.
His time at Liverpool wasn’t all bad though, he recorded nine goals and three assists in 19 games in all competitions for his new club.
The Reds return to Prem tomorrow when they travel to Aston Villa.
