Stimulus update: Five Covid-19 support programs continue into 2022

When the Covid-19 pandemic began two years ago, a series of federal programs immediately launched to help individuals and businesses.

Some support – such as monthly child tax credit and stimulus test – has ended, but the program year will remain in 2022.

Student loan support

Student loan payments are initially set to begin again on February 1, 2022.

However, on December 22, 2021, the Department of Education extended the suspension of student loan payments until the end of May 1, 2022.

In a statement on the White House website, President Joe Biden said: “We know that millions of student loan borrowers are still coping with the effects of the pandemic and it may take some time before they get out. when resuming payments”.

The Student Aid Loan will continue to provide the following services:

  • Suspension of loan payments
  • 0% interest
  • Collections stopped for default loans

Emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

The next program that will remain available in 2022 is emergency assistance under SNAP.

It is also more widely known as food stamps.

At the start of the pandemic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture added $1 billion a month in food assistance.

These funds have helped an estimated 25 million people in low-income households put food on the table during this time.

Initial emergency SNAP benefits will expire at the end of September 2021, but select states are continuing to renew.

Here’s a list of states that are extending emergency SNAP benefits, worth at least $95, through January:

If you are looking to apply for the SNAP program, you are likely to receive the following benefits:

  • One-person household equals $250
  • Household of two equals $459
  • Household of three equals $658
  • Household of four equals $835

Rental support

Another Covid-19 program that will continue in 2022 is rental assistance programme.

This program can help you and your family get up to 18 months’ worth of rent and utilities paid instantly.

To qualify for rental assistance, you must have experienced financial hardship during the pandemic and have to pay rent.

However, to get monetary support up to $63,000, you need to act fast because Some states are closing applications.

Homeowner Support Fund

The Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) is a federal program that provides billions of dollars to states to help their residents catch up on their late payments.

A minimum of $50 million will be given to each state, and it can be used to reduce mortgage, utility bills, and other housing costs.

The National Council on State Housing Authority (NCSHA) has established Interactive map to help you find relief housing in your state.

Example: California recently started accepting applications mortgage reduction program.

It looks to help between 20,000 and 40,000 struggling homeowners, who could receive up to $80,000.

In Maryland, the state kicked in programme before Christmas.

Eligible Maryland homeowners in need can receive a one-time payment of up to $30,000.

Urgent broadband benefits

Finally, the last Covid era program that will still be available this year is emergency broadband (EBB) benefit plan.

This program is no longer accepting new applications before December 31, 2021.

However, benefits will continue to be offered to existing recipients until March 1, 2022.

EBB was offering discounts of up to $50 a month on broadband services and up to $75 for those in Tribal lands.

After March, the emergency broadband benefit program will be replaced with Affordable Connectivity Program.

This is a new long-term program that will continue to help families and households struggling with internet access.
