Steve Bruce could shock his return to management with West Brom

But he is the most red favorite to take over The Hawthorns after Albion sacked Valerien Ismael yesterday just seven months after a four-year deal.

Bruce talked to Baggs and will be in charge for the first time on Wednesday at Sheffield United.

The search for a new West Brom manager is being led by former Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay, who has taken up a similar role at Albion.

Gourlay’s appointment was announced shortly after the news of Ismael’s departure in a behind-the-scenes interview.

But it is clear that Bruce is the man lined up to replace Ismael as the club’s sixth boss in under three years.

His first job was to stop the club’s slide and revive their challenge of promotion.

Bruce boasts a fantastic championship record taking Birmingham and Hull to the top twice each.

Baggies fans have backed Ismael, 46, after a string of poor results sent his side falling out of the top two places.

Albion are fifth with just three wins in 14 games and Saturday’s 0-2 loss to Millwall was the last.
