Stephen A. Smith taunts Molly Qerim for ‘making a big difference’ as First Take host asks ‘seriously’

STEPHEN A. Smith’s sarcastic side was seen on Monday’s First Take.

The 55-year-old was embroiled in a discussion over reports quarterback Derek Carr, 31, could join the New Orleans Saints.

After Smith admitted a Saints team led by Carr “doesn’t really capture my imagination,” co-host Molly Qerim, 38, tried to make the case for the move.

She remarked: “Don’t forget, it was (Saints coach) Dennis Allen who drafted Derek Carr – he was head coach of the (Oakland) Raiders in 2014.

“So now they will be together again [a] Head coach/quarterback tandem in New Orleans.”

In a sudden overload of sarcasm accompanied by an appropriate gasp, Smith commanded everyone’s attention after that note.

He explained: “Wait, y’all! Molly, wow!

“I did not know that. That makes a world of difference. I mean we need to stop the presses now. Dennis Allen who went 7-10 last year.”

Qerim interjected, telling Smith not to “detract from the depth and interesting note I just added to the conversation.”

But Smith was quick to tell Qerim, “Stop being sensitive Molly, I’m not tapping you.

“I appreciate the tidbit of information. I’m just saying my god! … That makes a big difference!

And when Qerim tried to step in again to break the breaking news that Carr had signed for the Saints, Smith’s ongoing sarcasm prompted her to simply reply, “Seriously?”

Carr joined New Orleans on a four-year deal worth $150 million, including $100 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network Ian Rapport.

And while Smith wasn’t convinced by the move, guest host and former NFL linebacker Sam Acho reacted more optimistically, turning around his comment that “context matters.”

He said: “Context is important because remember, in this NFC South, a team with a losing record made the playoffs.

“The context is important. All of a sudden, this team that was 7-10 last year now has a quarterback.

“Context is important. If you suddenly find a bit of chemistry, your defense has been dominant for a decade – I still look at the clock, their defense is still good.

“Cam Jordan is still on this team, they have so many great players on this defense. Demario Davis, one of the best linebackers in the game. The context is important.”
