STEPHEN A SMITH’s “floating” list of the top five NFL teams continues to stun many.
Every week, First Take host Smith presents his top five teams in the league, and every week he’s berated on social media for his decisions.
And this week was no different.
At the helm he had the only undefeated team in the NFL – the Philadelphia Eagles.
blacksmith said: “Jalen Hurts is an MVP candidate. They can run the football. They can throw the football. They can protect. They can run block. They have (Dallas) Goedert as a close end.
“They have a defense that is genuine. If you look at the Philadelphia Eagles, they are the most complete team in the National Football League.”
Just behind the Eagles Smith had the Buffalo Bills, who just clinched a dominant 38-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Smith admitted, “I’m depressed. I don’t like what they did to my Steelers. That was abusive. It was bad. They treated the Steelers like the Steelers didn’t even belong in the NFL. It could have been 50 .”
“Josh Allen is that guy. (Stefon) Diggs is that guy. Gabe Davis is that guy.”
By three, Smith had the Kansas City Chiefs, who he explained were there for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Smith explained, “He still got my brother from another mother, Travis Kelce. Juju Smith-Schuster wasn’t shabby. Mecole Hardman is here.
“You look at the Kansas City Chiefs, their offense, with Andy Reid, with Eric Bieniemy, still in flux, still doing their stuff, putting the ball all over the place, and as a result, it’s almost making them hard to close stop sometimes. And a defense that isn’t as terrible as it has been in the past.
Then came a team whose fan base is safe to say Smith has had a turbulent history – the Dallas Cowboys.
Citing the fact that quarterback Cooper Rush remains undefeated, Smith also called their defense “real.”
However, Smith was quick to point out that “I don’t expect this to last either, but the list is fluid.”
“The fact is, at this particular point in time, the Dallas Cowboys have one of the top two defenses in the National Football League. A defense that travels, that gets to quarterback, that has elite brothers in the high school, led by (Trevon) Diggs.”
Smith also called linebacker Micah Parsons “the second coming of LT (Lawrence Taylor)” — a bold claim considering Taylor is widely considered the greatest defensive player of all time.
But arguably Smith’s biggest surprise of all came at five – the Minnesota Vikings.
Smith explained, “We’ve seen what Kirk Cousins is doing. We need to give him some love – it won’t be long, but we need to give him some love.
“Dalvin Cook is here. (Justin) Jefferson is that guy. The defense is not shabby. You are worthy of being number five.”
It was this ranking that seemed to divide fans the most on social media.
One tweeted: “You really should only be talking about basketball… you just don’t know anything about football at all. The Vikings lmao wtf. Beat the lions, saints and bears.
Another said: “Respectable Top 4. Vikings at 5? [laughing emoji] Ha! #JustinFields destroyed them in the second half. NFL#Bears#badcall”
While a third commented: “The Vikings?? The only notable win they have is in Week 1 against the Packers.
If Minnesota can get a result against the 3-2 Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Oct. 16, maybe Smith and the Vikings can prove the doubters wrong.
