Stepfather of 22-year-old man who ‘beheaded pregnant ex-girlfriend in shower’ sends heartbreaking message to victim’s family

The stepfather of one accused killer has said he will not try to “get his son out of this” and has repeatedly apologized to the victim’s family.

Christopher Hawk, whose 22-year-old stepson Deundrea Holloway allegedly beheaded his pregnant ex-girlfriend Liese Dodd, said he wishes he could try more things to help his son ahead of Dodd’s death.

Deundrea Holloway's stepfather Christopher Hawk said he was ashamed of what his stepson had done and kept apologizing to the victim's family during an interview with The Sun

Holloway suffered from severe mental illness for years and heard “dark voices,” Hawk told The Sun.

Holloway’s parents tried to get him help, but he refused help while still being plagued by the voices, including one named “Ruth,” Hawk said.

They took him to a clinic, but Holloway wouldn’t take the medicine and left after a few days.

During his 30-minute interview with The Sun, Hawk wanted to share this news with Dodd’s family:

“I don’t know her and I don’t know what to say. I don’t want to downplay what happened to them at all. I don’t want to downplay her loss at all. I’m sorry really sorry.

“I’m ashamed and I wish I could go back and try different tactics than we did.”

Hawk said he thinks the key is the clinic, which they tried about two years before the alleged murder last week.

They brought Holloway in after he told his mother he heard voices in his head.

But Hawk said his stepson didn’t “want to be locked up”, didn’t want to take the medicine and walked out of the clinic, which couldn’t hold him.

“I don’t know if I would have done anything in particular differently. I think the most important thing would have been the time he was (in the clinic).

“If we could have kept him there long enough to get his medication and adjust, then I think we would have had a better opportunity to keep him in our home for a period of time.”

Instead, he walked out and became “temporary,” Hawk said.

He would come and go to his mother’s house to get his mail or when he was in great pain.

The way police described his stepson when they said he was a monster “dehumanized” him and failed to take into account his mental health issues and paranoia.

It also takes from the victims – Liesle Dodd and her unborn child.

“Everyone knows Ted Bundy, but nobody remembers who he killed. I want everyone to remember Liesle Dodd,” Hawk said.

He recalled his last one-on-one interaction with his stepson – who he called “D” – before the arrest last week.

Hawk sold him his truck and “D made a comment about humanoids and some humans that aren’t fully human.”

“That was Ruth’s voice,” Hawk said. “Ruth told him that certain people are humanoid and can’t be trusted. You are not real. And he told me that they also tell him who to trust and who not.

“He didn’t mention the names of the other two voices, but Ruth was someone who would tell him that he needed to shut up certain people.

“As far as I know, she never directly encouraged violence. But I think when Ruth tells him he needs to shut someone up, that’s violent, especially if you have the paranoia.”

THE ALLEGED CRIME

Dodd’s mother found her daughter’s remains at her home in Alton, Illinois on June 9, 2022, and her body was discovered in a nearby dumpster, police officers said.

Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido told reporters that her mother wanted to check on Dodd when she found her remains.

He said she was “cruelly killed” and added it was “more than reprehensible”.

Cops revealed Dodd and Holloway, also 22, were on and off for about two years.

Holloway was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and first-degree murder.
