Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff meant to light up in Season 5, she actually did. But between Dean’s death, Ben and Bailey’s looming war Pru’s custody, Andy and Sullivan’s divorce, and Vic’s breakup and problem, it’s just not in the tag.
So when Grey’s Anatomy spinoff returns on Thursday, February 24th, “the second half of the season takes a slightly darker turn [I first planned],” Vernoff told TVLine during this year’s SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) Television Festival, which takes place on Saturday. (Pass is available for purchase here.)
EP hope let the good times pass. So much so now, “the script room keeps mocking me,” she said, “because I entered this season, after [the] The year of COVID, like, ‘It’s the season of Fun, Hey guys! ‘ And the whole first month, they threw me in the dark, so I said, ‘No! It’s the season of Fun! ‘
“And then everything I laid out was darker than anything” that had happened before, she continued with a smile. At this point, “they started singing with me, ‘Seasonnn of Funnn!’ It’s not great [for the characters]but that’s great for the actors. “
Vernoff has no debate on that topic since Jaina Lee Ortiz, who plays Andy. “Thanks Krista, [Herrera’s] Chaos and tragedy are thrown [at her from] every direction, that makes it interesting, so I never get bored,” she said. “I used to think I had too much in common with Andy, but as the season went on, I said, ‘I Nothing like that girl. ‘”
As for Vic, the portrait painter Barrett Doss sigh, “The struggle continues” after Dean’s death. “She still has a journey to go on this season, and I’m really excited that everyone will be riding on that ride with her.
“It’s challenging and I love watching such a cheerfully lucky character go through a dark period, dark she continued. The factor that led her to break up with boyfriend Theo, and yes, “she was on the bus fighting. But if anyone can come back, it’s your girl… I’d love to see how people feel about the next chapter. ”
Your mind, even in the dark, is there will Take it easy, Ortiz suggests. “It will be hot, it will be steamy, there will be fire, there will be drama, people will die…” In short, the second half of Season 5 has “all sorts of things,” she attests. “All things!” (With reporting by Matt Webb Mitovich)
