Staten Island ferry catches fire with 600 passengers on board with shock images of evacuation near Statue of Liberty

A FIRE in the engine room of a passenger ferry prompted evacuations in New York Harbor on Thursday evening.
The Staten Island Ferry ship had about 600 passengers on board when it stalled near the Statue of Liberty around 5 p.m.

At that time, the ferry ran from Manhattan to Staten Island.
The fire occurred in the engine room and was extinguished by the boat’s fire suppression system.
The ship was anchored and the passengers were removed from other boats and taken to the St George Ferry Terminal.
So far 120 passengers have been evacuated.
No injuries were reported, the FDNY said.
