And even with Michael Carrick in charge, supporters in Spain made a conscious effort to give the sacked leader a respectful farewell.

Based on Andy Mitten, which had a profound impact on Solskjaer as he took the action.

And the former elite striker sent public and private messages of support to the Red Devils and Carrick players before the match.

“Michael, I have the highest respect [for], I love Michael to every bit. Now I’m getting emotional because he’s top.

“They’ll be fine. I’ll be watching them and supporting them.”

In response, Carrick dedicated the victory to his former boss.

He said: “I enjoyed it very much. It was not an easy few days for everyone at the club and I can enjoy it a lot.

“But it looks like that result is for Ole and I can’t get away with that.

“We had a job to do and fortunately, all went according to plan.”

Carrick looks set to stay in charge of Sunday’s trip to Chelsea before Ralf Rangnick takes over as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The Red Devils will then appoint a long-term successor to Solskjer, with Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers being the favorites.
