Soldier-related shooting injures one along I-75 in Collier County

WINK News is still working to determine what caused a person to be transported to a hospital following the shooting on I-75.

This happened Sunday morning along I-75, near marker 103 in Collier County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said one of its soldiers answered a call requesting service. However, we’re still not sure what caused that soldier to fire their weapon.

WINK News Security and Safety Expert Rich Kolko explains the situation. “Starting a traffic stop is one of the most dangerous things any officer can do. They don’t know what they’re getting into,” Kolko said.

WINK News reporter Dannille Garcia spent the day asking authorities why the soldier opened fire, who was in the vehicle, why the vehicle was parked at the median for so long, and why no arrests were made. Which is done?

Since law enforcement did not answer these questions, Garcia turned to Kolko. He is a retired FBI agent. “This is one of the lucky cases where the investigator had the time to meet the person of interest, know who that person is, have the means to check, they can do more information, do additional investigation, search for more information. . witnesses,” Kolko said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, FDLE, said FHP asked it to take over its investigation into the soldier’s shooting. That soldier is also currently on administrative leave, which is the norm in these cases.

“Now they have time to gather information, with whom the soldier interacts with the soldier receiving medical treatment. So if there’s going to be an arrest,” Kolko said. “The investigation will continue to gather evidence, interview and speak with state attorneys general to ensure that the soldiers duck repeatedly before they actually make an arrest.”

FHP confirmed that the person shot was being treated for his injuries. The soldier was not injured in this shooting.

Collier County EMS told WINK that the person who was shot is currently at Lee Memorial Hospital. They are being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.
