A SLOTH bear mauled a couple to death before devouring their bodies in a horror forest murder.
Mukesh Rai and his wife Gudiya were walking home through a forested area in Panna, India, when they spotted the animal.
The unsuspecting pair were then devastated by the creature as it ripped their bodies apart before feeding on the carcasses, the Times of India reports.
Mukesh and Gudiya, aged 43 and 39 respectively, reportedly attempted to confront the bear before the brutal attack around 6:30am on Sunday.
The bear is believed to have dragged their bodies to a river before feasting on them for more than four hours.
Police then arrived at the scene, and it took officers another two hours to calm and capture the animal.
The bear was taken to a zoo and the couple’s loved ones received Rs 400,000 (£4,000) in financial support.
Divisional Forest Officer Gaurav Sharma told DNA India: “The animal will not be released in the forest and we plan to send it to a zoo in another city.”
Sloths can weigh up to a staggering 6 feet tall and weigh up to 310 pounds.
They are known to act aggressively towards humans when they feel threatened or frightened.
A 2015 review of attacks in central India found that victims mostly suffered injuries to the face and scalp, with sloth bears being implicated in 48 attacks analyzed.
Sloth bears are responsible for more deaths than polar bears or grizzly bears, and when they attack, victims have their faces ripped off if they survive – and their corpses eaten if they don’t.
The name “sloth bear” is extremely misleading as they share few traits with the sloth to which they are not related.
They are agile bears who can run faster than a human and will attack if caught off guard, leaving many survivors with life-changing injuries.
They seem fearless, and even tigers shy away from confrontations with the sharp-clawed beasts.
Shaggy, dusty and unkempt, the sloth bear lives in the forests of South Asia.
These are some of the worst attacks on sloth bears’ paws.
It comes after chilling footage showed the moment a man was ravaged by a rampaging bear after attacking him for killing a couple.
Baipilli Urvasi, 50, and her husband Tirupathi Rao, 55, were beaten to death when the deadly beast pounced on them in an orchard in India.
The villagers then attacked the brown bear, and the huge animal was seen fighting back in a video reminiscent of the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant.
